Bad Dollz

Bad Dollz is a special collaboration between Meet The Kawan and Evangelione, designed specifically to raise funds for Bad Taste: An Illustration Exhibition.

Working in line with the theme for their exhibition, Meet The Kawan took inspiration from subcultures in the fashion world, which have gathered some mixed, sometimes controversial opinions, throughout the years.

Each doll is one of a kind, handmade heirloom quality art doll made in Malaysia. "White Ermine Moth Girl" is meticulously crafted by doll maker Evangelione, while ideated and customised by the artist Gee Fan Eng from Meet The Kawan.

ARTIST STATEMENT
White Ermine Moth Girl is a doll conceptualised by Gee Fan Eng.

Camp is an aesthetic “sensibility” that is plain to see but hard for most of us to explain, which is appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. The inspiration of White Ermine Moth Girl comes from a line in Susan Sontag’s essay, "Notes on 'Camp'" — “Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.” It reminds Gee Fan of white, furry, less likable and flying animals.

Gee Fan personally thinks moths are beautiful creatures although some people find moths disgusting and are terrified of their appearance. In this project, she tried to present the moths in Camp style, to manifest the hallmark of Camp — the spirit of extravagance.

All the dolls came in a gorgeous box entirely handmade by Gee Fan, and she specifically matched the cover fabric with their respective dolls.
The dolls came with their identity card and a translucent envelope. The artist's signature is on the back of the identity card.
